Safe and Trusted AI: IndiaAI Selects 5 Innovative Projects on Deepfake Detection, Bias Mitigation

New Delhi: IndiaAI has announced five groundbreaking projects under its Safe and Trusted AI initiative to strengthen the country’s AI governance framework.

These projects focus on cutting-edge solutions for deepfake detection, bias mitigation, and AI penetration testing, marking a significant leap toward secure and ethical AI adoption in India.

Launched under the ‘Safe and Trusted AI’ pillar of the IndiaAI Mission, the second round of Expression of Interest (EoI) received over 400 proposals from leading academic institutions, startups, research organizations, and civil society.

Following an extensive evaluation by a multi-stakeholder committee, five proposals were selected for their potential to translate responsible AI principles into practical applications.

Key Projects Under the Safe and Trusted AI Initiative
  • Saakshya – A multi-agent, RAG-enhanced framework for deepfake detection and governance, developed by IIT Jodhpur (CI) and IIT Madras.
  • AI Vishleshak – A project by IIT Mandi and the Directorate of Forensic Services, Himachal Pradesh, aimed at improving audio-visual deepfake and signature forgery detection through adversarial robustness and explainability.
  • Real-Time Voice Deepfake Detection System – Created by IIT Kharagpur to enhance forensic and cybersecurity capabilities.
  • Gender Bias in Agricultural AI Models – A joint project by Digital Futures Lab and Karya focused on identifying and mitigating gender bias in agricultural LLMs while developing open digital public goods.
  • Anvil – A penetration testing and evaluation tool for large language models (LLMs) and generative AI, developed by Globals ITES Pvt. Ltd. and IIIT Dharwad.

Strengthening India’s AI Safety and Governance

The five projects exemplify IndiaAI’s commitment to building a Safe and Trusted AI ecosystem that aligns with the nation’s ethical, social, and technological priorities. They are designed to ensure that AI systems deployed across sectors are resilient, transparent, and secure.
